THE CHALLENGE

The objective of the project is to develop a multichannel campaign for Barcelona. Develop a logo and various branded pieces to promote tourism in the city.

CONCEPT

Develop a cohesive graphic design concept for the city of Barcelona, capturing its unique blend of rich cultural heritage, modern sophistication, and dynamic energy. The design should resonate with both locals and visitors, showcasing Barcelona as a vibrant hub of creativity, innovation, and Mediterranean charm.

Research & Discovery

Barcelona, often referred to as the Paris of Spain, boasts a captivating blend of architectural marvels by Antoni Gaudi and picturesque Gothic quarters. As Spain's primary port city, it draws visitors with its sun-kissed beaches. Throughout the year, Barcelona hosts a plethora of festivals and lively street celebrations, deeply rooted in tradition. The city pulses with the rhythm of musical performances and the colorful hustle and bustle of street vendors.

Ideation

As I embarked on sketching, I immersed myself in the rich history and design influences of the city. Barcelona's profound heritage, ranging from Gaudi's modernist architecture to the artistic legacy of Picasso, provided ample inspiration. Drawing from the city's mosaic artistry and distinctive architectural forms, I experimented with combining diverse typefaces and design elements to capture the essence of Barcelona's vibrant character.

Digital Drafts

I narrowed down my sketches to explore four different directions each capturing a different concept that demonstrates different ideas that are inspired by Barcelona.

OPTION 1

The first option pays homage to the Gothic Quarter and the majestic cathedrals that define the city's historic charm. The spires located at the top of the letter forms are meant to reflect the ones you would see on the Sagrada Familia which represent different religious figures.

OPTION 2

The second option draws inspiration from the iconic "I Love NY" design by Milton Glaser, reimagined to showcase the unique spirit of Barcelona. I chose to go with a cursive typeface to reflect the signature style of Gaudi himself who I feel made Barcelona the creative marvel it is today.

OPTION 3

For the third option, I chose to go with a modern typeface because the architectural style of the city is known for that. I attempted to manipulate some of the letterforms to be reminiscent of the city's architectural wonders and intricate archways.

OPTION 4

Lastly, the fourth option draws from the brilliance of Gaudi's architecture, specifically inspired by the intricate mosaic patterns found in his designs. By incorporating the outline shape of one of Gaudi's buildings and infusing it with mosaic motifs, this option encapsulates the vibrant and artistic character of Barcelona.

Icons

Initially, I planned to feature Barcelona's renowned landmarks as icons. However, considering this will be utilized by visitors unfamiliar with the city, I opted for more universal symbols. I realized my initial sketches were overly intricate, prompting me to simplify them in my digital drafts.

In designing the icons, I aimed to cater to common destinations travelers seek, including culinary delights, beachfront areas, parks, historical sites, markets, and entertainment venues.
